Billy Joel breaks records at Madison Sq. Garden
Billy Joel has embarked on a record breaking 11 concert run at New York's Madison Square Garden.
The veteran singer/songwriter broke Bruce Springsteen's Y2K record of 10 nights at the famed New York venue by selling out one further night, and it seems that Joel could even sell out a 12th night later this year.
"We're always cautious when we begin and we're humbled by our success," Joel Arfa said. "You never think about breaking Babe Ruth's home run record until you get to that point where it's within reach, then all of a sudden you say, 'Wow, we're Hank Aaron here."'
The music magazine also reports that, with a 19,000 capacity, the total attendance could top 210,000, and gross over $17m. Ticket prices, however, were planned to make the shows accessible, with the most expensive just shy of $100.
"We're trying to make it affordable for the guy who works in the plant," Arfa says, "not just the guy who owns it."
